Welcome to MKTG Collective: Where Tactical Specialists Become Strategic Leaders
When I joined the Minnesota Wild as a Digital and Social Media Specialist back in 2013, social media marketing wasn't widely understood as a revenue driver. It was still viewed primarily as a fan engagement tool — a place for content and conversation, not conversion or monetization.
But I saw the potential for more.
I began proactively brainstorming content ideas that would align with specific partners' objectives. I worked closely with our partnership team to create valuation frameworks based on social metrics, engagement rates, and projected reach. We were essentially building the bridge between social media tactics and business outcomes in real-time, figuring it out as we went along.
This wasn't a sudden revelation prompted by an executive's challenging question. Instead, it was a gradual evolution — a series of small wins, collaborative experiments, and incremental steps toward connecting my tactical social media expertise with tangible business results.
One of those "small wins" came through helping our athletes understand the strategic value of their social media presence. During development camps, I'd give presentations on how players could leverage their platforms for more than just vacation photos or game highlights.
I still remember a conversation with one of our coaches after a session. He mentioned that he always viewed charitable work as something that should remain private to be truly altruistic. But when I explained how athletes sharing their community involvement could inspire thousands of fans to support those same causes, his perspective shifted.
"It's not about bragging," I told him. "It's about using your influence to multiply the impact."
That moment of understanding—connecting personal content to larger strategic goals—exemplified the kind of thinking that transformed my approach to social media.
This approach began my journey from tactical specialist to strategic leader — a journey that eventually led me from managing social media accounts in the NHL to heading digital marketing for a rapidly growing emerging sport in pickleball.
And it's the journey I'm here to help you navigate with MKTG Collective.
Why I Started This Newsletter
If you're reading this, chances are you're excellent at what you do. Maybe you're a social media manager who crafts perfect posts, a content creator who produces engaging videos, or a digital marketer who runs effective campaigns.
But you want more than tactical expertise. You want to:
Advance into leadership roles with broader impact
Connect your work directly to business outcomes
Develop strategic thinking that transcends platforms and trends
Build influence beyond your current responsibilities
Transform your career trajectory by becoming invaluable to your organization
I've walked this path, making the transition from social media specialist to digital marketing leader across both traditional sports (NHL) and emerging sports (pickleball). Along the way, I've learned that this transition isn't about abandoning tactical skills — it's about layering strategic thinking on top of them.

Whether you're looking to secure your first promotion, demonstrate your value during budget season, or position yourself for senior leadership, I'm here to provide the frameworks and insights I wish I'd had.
My transition to pickleball reinforced everything I learned at the NHL but in a completely different context. Leading marketing for an emerging sport taught me that strategic thinking is truly portable across industries and organization sizes. It's not about mastering a specific platform or tool—it's about developing a mindset that connects tactical execution to business outcomes no matter where you are. These are the universal principles I'm excited to share with you.
One thing I've learned: meaningful career advancement isn't about overnight success. In an era where we celebrate 20-something founders and rapid rises to the C-suite, it's easy to forget that most sustainable careers follow a more deliberate path. We'll explore both the immediate wins that build credibility and the long-term strategies that create lasting impact.
